Netherlands: immigrants and Remembrance Day

According to a new survey 60% of Turks in the Netherlands do not know why the country observes a 2 minute silence on Remembrance Day (commemorating those who fell in the wars). Almost 75% do not observe the day.

77% of Surinamese and 62% of Moroccans are acquainted with day, with younger immigrants being more aware of it. By ethnic Dutch about 10% don't know what the silence is for. More immigrants take part in Liberation day (commemorating the liberation from the German forces and the end of WWII), but about half of them don't. Those that do mostly visit a fair or market. The Liberation day festivals are less popular.
