Dutch interior minister happy with Muslim organizations

Dutch Minister of the Interior Remkes said he is happy with the efforts Muslim organizations are taking against radicalizations.

Half a year ago Remkes complained that moderate Muslims did not speak out enough against radical developments. Following meetings of local government officials with mosque representatives, appealing to their responsibilities, representatives of mosques today present themselves much more moderately in public.

Remkes also spoke about the influence of the internet on radicalization, which he said is probably already greater than mosques and Islamic organizations. Muslim, as well as Dutch converts, are becoming radicalized. According to Remkes, 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants, who are often without work, are looking to the internet for answers to their questions about life and identity.

A new site has opened this week to enable reporting of expressions of radicalism.
